What is platelet rich plasma (PRP)?
PRP is the substance that is derived from one’s own blood. Blood is drawn from the patient and then spun down so that the serum can be extracted. The serum contains many growth factors which helps stimulate and promote healing. Platelet rich plasma can be used for all types of pain but is particularly useful for torn tendons, muscles, as well as joint pain.
How many treatments are necessary?
On average, 3-6 sessions are needed for treatment. At times, patients may need more or fewer treatments depending on how well they heal. Proper nutrition is an important part of the healing process.
How is prolotherapy different from steroid injections?
Steroids produce short-term pain relief and inhibits inflammation. This inhibits the body’s own ability to heal itself. Over time, there is degeneration of tissue and joints. Prolotherapy does not cause any of these problems. In fact, it does just the opposite.
